Parents & Teachers Working Together 2005/06 - 2009/10

Stage One - Completed

Database Report :          Identification of  Remote Indigenous Community Programs

COGSO's Parents and Teachers Working Together project, funded by the NT Department of Employment, Education and Training (DEET), is designed to  research and deliver a relevant support program for remote Indigenous community school's parents and teachers. Parents and Teachers Working Together, arose as a recommendation of Building Better Schools in 2005.

Stage one of Parents and Teachers Working Together a mapping project to identify existing service delivery in 100 remote Indigenous community schools sites was undertaken to ensure COGSO's program does not repeat or conflict with others already established.

The Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education (BIITE) was contracted to undertake the building of a suitable data base in to identify and categorise factors such as the length of programs, target groups, funding agencies etc.

Key areas of investigation were services and/or providers in:

  • Education
  • Training
  • Health
  • Welfare
  • Other human services and community development programs

Outcomes of the mapping project are now informing the design of an appropriate support program for parents and teachers in remote Indigenous community schools. Design and delivery will also be influenced by the outcomes of COGSO's Strong Schools Strong Communities field based research due for completion by the end of September 2007.

Further updates on Parents and Teachers Working Together will be available in October 2007.
