Mission StatementCOGSO encourages continual improvement in the provision of quality education outcomes for all students in public education. HistoryA brief history of the NT Council of Government School Organisations The Council was founded in 1971 as a Territory wide body to represent the interests of School Councils and parent bodies in Government Schools. It became an affiliate of the Australian Council of State School Organisations (ACSSO) the same year and has taken an active part in the national organisation. From 1973 to 1975, the President of NT COGSO, Mr Geoff Helyar was also President of ACSSO and from 1986 to 1988, Mr John Pinney was Treasurer of ACSSO. In 1989, Mr Richard Creswick was elected Senior Vice President of the national organisation and President in 1992. He remained in this position for the maximum allowed period of three years. A Southern Regional Branch, including Tennant Creek and Alice Springs was formed in 1974. Katherine Regional Branch was formed in 1979 and Tennant Creek formed their own branch, Barkly, in 1976. East Arnhem Region was formed in 1980 and Darwin in 1982. A Darwin Rural Branch was formed in 1985, and in 1993 the name was changed to Palmerston and Rural Region. In 1975 the Council received a small grant from the Government to set up an office and employ a part-time secretary. A half salary grant from the Schools Commission and the Northern Territory Government enabled the position of Parent Liaison Officer to become effective in April of 1980. Until January 1990, the Northern Territory Department of Education employed a full-time Parent Liaison Officer and half of her time was to act as Executive Officer to COGSO. In addition, COGSO employed a part-time Research Officer and Secretary, and had a trainee Clerical Assistant. The Parent Liaison Officer is no longer located within the COGSO Office. COGSO now employs a full time Executive Officer and a part time Administration Officer. Affiliated OrganisationsAffiliated organisations are those School Councils that pay their annual affiliation fees. Affiliated school organisations are represented at the annual conference by delegates, the number depending on the size of the school. The annual conference elects an Executive of three, the positions of President, Vice-President and Treasurer. Region Representatives to Executive are endorsed at the Regional level at a General Meeting of the Region. The executive normally meets 4 times per year as well as the Annual General Meeting and carries out the policy of Council as laid down by the annual conference.
